Cardiothoracic Surgery

The cardiothoracic surgery specialist area deals with diseases and lesions in the chest (thorax) and its organs. Cardiothoracic surgery is divided into two sub-specialist areas of cardiac surgery and classical thorax surgery. The specialist area covers e.g.:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the organs of the thoracic cavity
  • Surgery in the ribcage and the organs in the thoracic cavity, including the heart, lungs, oesophagus and larger blood vessels. The operations include e.g. heart and lung transplants
  • Rehabilitation of patients with diseases or injuries in the thoracic cavity

Clinical Genetics

The medical specialist area of clinical genetics deals with the diagnosis of genetically determined diseases as well as genetic counselling with the aim of providing patients and their relatives with the best possible basis for decisions about e.g. pregnancy, genetic testing and follow-up and treatment programmes. The specialist area covers e.g.:

  • Laboratory analyses (chromosomal examinations and molecular-genetic examinations for hereditary diseases)

The medical specialist area of clinical microbiology is a cross-disciplinary laboratory specialist area that analyses samples from patients and their environment for the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. Clinical microbiology is used in society's monitoring of infectious diseases and in the work of limiting the spread of resistant bacteria. The specialist area covers e.g.:

The medical specialty dermato-venerology is divided into two parts and deals with skin and venereal diseases. Dermato is Greek and means skin, and venereology refers to Venus, the Roman goddess of lovemaking.

Emergency medicine deals with the acute and clarifying phase of a course of illness requiring hospital treatment, from the first contact with the emergency department through to discharge or any hospitalisation in a specialised hospital department. The specialist area covers e.g.:

  • Diagnosis, assessment and treatment of all acute conditions for all types of patients at all hours of the day

Lung Diseases

Pulmonology covers a broad range of different diseases in the airways, lungs and pleura. The diseases can be hereditary, congenital or acquired diseases as for instance:

Neurology

The medical specialist area of neurology deals with the diagnostics, treatment, rehabilitation and management of diseases of the brain, spinal cord and nerves around the body. Neurological diseases are found in more than one in ten hospitalised patients. Today, there are many options for precise diagnostics and treatment, but a number of patients still suffer permanent physical and mental disabilities.

The specialist area covers e.g.:

Public Health

The medical specialist area of public health is concerned with the relationship between social conditions and the health of the population. The two main directions are social medicine and administrative medicine.

In social medicine, the medical specialist most often works on an individual level with social medical issues for the individual citizen. In administrative medicine, the medical doctor works at group level with selected population groups or at societal level – for example with monitoring, maintaining and improving the health of the population.

A medical specialist in social medicine applies knowledge, methods and skills from clinical medical work together with knowledge, methods and skills from epidemiology, law, public health science, social sciences and sociology. The social medicine areas of expertise include:

  • Living conditions and health
  • Environment and emergency response
  • Psychosocial conditions, lifestyle and health
  • The structure and function of healthcare- and social services

Radiology

The medical specialist area of radiology covers diagnostic imaging with X-ray examinations and scans throughout the spectrum from CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic Resonance) to UL (ultrasound), as well as treatments such as image-guided catheter insertion and drainage, treatment of blood vessels such as widening of narrowed arteries, etc. The specialist area covers e.g.:

The vascular surgical specialist area deals with surgery of the body's vascular system. The diseases mainly consist of constriction and obstruction due to atherosclerosis and thrombosis or aneurysms, where the vessels expand and may eventually burst. The specialist area covers e.g.:

  • Prevention and treatment of diseases in the blood and lymphatic vessels outside the brain and heart
  • Surgical procedures – both open surgery and endovascular surgery
  • Arteriosclerosis in the blood vessels outside the brain and the heart and the sequelae
