Improving prevention and treatment of bone and joint infections

Meet Mats Bue

“Our research findings have resulted in new antibiotic dosing regimens and greater awareness of when, how and how much antibiotics we administer to orthopaedic patients.”

Born in 1989, Mats Bue is a young and driven scientist at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Aarhus University Hospital. His research focuses on improving the prevention and treatment of bone and joint infections in orthopedic surgery.

As co-founder of the Aarhus Denmark Microdialysis Research Group (ADMIRE), he has developed experimental and clinical models for microdialysis sampling in bone and soft tissues to better understand antibiotic tissue penetration.

Could revolutionize treatment for staphylococcal infections

The associate professor’s work has shown that bone tissue is a complex and heterogenous compartment, and that different antibiotics behave differently in bone tissue. He has also demonstrated that the mode of administration plays a key role in achieving therapeutic antibiotic concentrations at the target site.

As Mats Bue puts it:

“Our research findings have resulted in new antibiotic dosing regimens and greater awareness of when, how and how much antibiotics we administer to orthopaedic patients.”

The associate professor’s goal is to improve the quality and success of current bone infection treatment protocols, with the aim of benefiting patients’ mortality, morbidity, functional recovery, and limb sparing, while reducing healthcare costs.

To achieve this, he is working on several projects, including a novel antibiotic treatment with a uniquely long half-life that could potentially revolutionize treatment for orthopedic staphylococcal infections.

Got into the field as a research year student

Mats Bue’s passion for research and orthopaedic surgery began in 2013, when he worked as a research year student under the supervision of Professor Kjeld Søballe. Since then, he has steadily progressed and established important cross-disciplinary national and international collaborations which are key drivers for his motivation.

“I have been privileged to meet and collaborate with many extremely inspiring and competent people engaged in this field, and they have all taught me a lot and provided me with enormous motivation to evolve and improve,” he says.

With his dedication and innovative research, Mats Bue is making significant strides in improving the prevention and treatment of bone and joint infections and is a promising young scientist in the field.
