Funding sources

We fund our research by means of different sources:

  • External funding
    • Private and public foundations
    • Corporate funding, i.e., funding from business and industry
  • Internal funding

External funding

External funding is our largest source of funds. The research at the department heavily depends on funds from public and private foundations as well as contributions and collaborative agreements from the industry.

Private and public foundations

Both major and minor foundations support our research with financial contributions. Relevant foundations can be found at the external funding database ResearchProfessional.com. Furthermore, a comprehensive list of foundations specifically relevant for our department as well as previous funding sources and funds received can be found at our Google Drive.

Corporate funding

Internal funding

Funding strategy

Grant proposal

The grant proposal is comprised by different documents and is targeted the foundation, organization or funding agency. The proposal is typically comprised by the following documents:

  • Cover letter
  • Layman's description
  • Project description
  • Budget
  • CV and publication list of the applicant and eventually also of the supervisor

The grant proposal should be styled to the specific fund or organization and should be prepaired in due time.

Read more about the grant proposal at the website of the Research Support Office.

Management and administration of funds

Internal reporting of grant applications

It is important that we register grant applications. This helps us keep track of which foundations supported researchers at the department before and with how much as well as which foundations did not support us before. In addition, the Department of Clinical Medicine recommend researchers to report grant applications exceeding 100,000 DKK.

ReAp

ReAp is a system to keep track of the external funding of research projects at Health, Aarhus University. When you submit a grant application, you must register the application in ReAp. See the guideline here.

Internal registration at the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

Internal registration to our grant application database should be done with all grant applications submitted. Add your application to the Excel file "Fonds- og bevillingsliste" at our Google Drive. When you receive an answer, mark it with either a "JA" or a "NEJ" in the column "Afvist (Ja/Nej)".

Letter of appreciation

When a grant has been approved, you have to send out a letter of appreciation. A template has been made for letters of appreciation - both a letter from Aarhus University Hospital and Aarhus University.

PowerPoint templates

There are three types of templates for PowerPoint slideshows and xxx for posters in PowerPoint.

CTVS PowerPoint templates

By following the link to the right, you will be redirected to a folder with three kind of templates, including a template for scientific PowerPoint presentations with IMRAD structure and another without IMRAD structure and a template for poster presentations. The CTVS PowerPoint templates are for all staff affiliated with Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and contains logos from CTVS, AUH, and AU.

Official templates from Aarhus University

Follow the link to find templates for PowerPoint slideshows. Aarhus University does not have an official template for posters. If your PC is joined to the UNI domain, the templates are integrated in Word and PowerPoint. If your PC is not joined to the UNI domain, you can download AU’s templates one by one by following the link.

Official templates from Aarhus University Hospital

Templates for both slideshow PowerPoint presentations and posters can be downloaded from the intranet of Central Denmark Region. To access the templates you have to go through Citrix.

Images can either be produced by yourself or by paying a graphical designer or photographer, or free images can be found through the free sources listed by Health Communications (see buttons).

Publication

Affiliations

When preparing for publication in national and international scientific journals as well as in abstracts and in PowerPoint presentations and posters, affiliations to our department should be given as:

  • Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark

An eventual affiliation to the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University should be given as:

  • Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark

This is to unify the way our department is cited, so publications can be traced back to us.

Open Access publication

Open Access is preferred.

Open Access discount agreements

Aarhus University has a number of discount agreements (access list through button on the right). The following is required in order to use the agreements of discount:

  • The author must be the corresponding author
  • The author must use the institutional mail (xxx@clin.au.dk)
  • Choose "Gold OA" to publish without publication fees
  • Choose a CC-BY license

Information on the current Elsevier agreement can be found here:

Authorship

Authorship is generally based on the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals. This means that authorship is based on the following four criteria:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work;
  • AND drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content;
  • AND final approval of the version to be published;
  • AND agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

CRediT

The CRediT (Contributor Roles Taxonomy) was originally developed by CASRAI (Consortia Advancing Standards in Research Administration Information) to represent the roles typically played by contributors to scientific scholarly output. The roles describe each contributor’s specific contribution to the scholarly output. However, after the cessation of CASRAI, NISO (National Information Standards Organization) took over the management and has published the terminology as a formal ANSI/NISO standard.

Promotion & sharing of research

Sharing on social media

A publication in the European Heart Journal in 2020 found that a social media strategy of Twitter promotion for scientific papers from the cardiovascular domain seems to be associated with increased online visibility and higher number of citations. The department has it's own Twitter profile Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Aarhus with the profile name CTVS_Aarhus.
