Isolated Tricuspid Valve Surgery is much better than its reputation

An interdisciplinary team of researchers from the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Department of Cardiology at Aarhus University Hospital published remarkable results in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

Isolated tricuspid valve surgery is rarely performed as morbidity and mortality have been known to be high. In the article Outcomes of isolated tricuspid valve surgery in contemporary practice, results from all patients who underwent isolated tricuspid valve surgery at Aarhus University Hospital from 2013 to 2019 were published.

“Severe tricuspid regurgitation is associated with poor quality of life and prognosis. Our results provide strong support to treat these patients more liberally with surgery. We demonstrate that isolated tricuspid valve surgery can be performed safely and greatly improve patients’ functional status provided optimal surgical timing and patient selection.”

says Associate Professor Ivy Modrau on behalf of the authors. She adds that

“Our excellent results after conventional isolated tricuspid valve surgery may serve as benchmark to guide patient selection and to assess results in the growing field of transcatheter therapies.”
