SABA – Scrotal Abscess Drainage Audit


Aim: we investigated our management of scrotal abscesses in adults and tried to identify possible risk factors for re-abscess

Number of patients: screened 302 patients, 209 patients included 

Methods: a 5-year retrospective study at our university hospital based on medical records from patients with relevant diagnoses as per the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Edition (ICD-10 Classification). Case control design: All patients who developed a re-abscess within 90 days were considered cases, and were compared to controls, i.e. all patients that did not develop a re-abscess.

Inclusion: age at or above 18 years, persons with a scrotum, a relevant diagnosis at Aarhus University Hospital from 1st of January 2020 to 31st of December 2024. Relevant diagnoses were: Scrotal abscess (DN492A); Orchitis, epididymitis or epididymoorchitis with abscess (DN450); Abscess of the epididymis (DN450A); Testicular abscess (DN450B); Epididymoorchitis with abscess (DN450C) and Fournier’s gangrene (DA480)

Exclusion criteria: age below 18 years, no scrotal abscess as judged by the medical history
