Retrospective Investigation of Penile Biopsy Outcome

Aim: to examine the routes to penile cancer diagnosis and the role of penile biopsy

Number of patients: 841 screened and 398 with biopsy

Methods: in this retrospective observational study from our tertiary referral centre for penile cancer we include 625 patients referred as urgent suspected penile cancer within the Danish Cancer Patient Pathway (CPP) and 216 patients undergoing penile biopsy outside the CPP between January 1st 2021 and March 31st 2025. The CPP is a nationwide fast-track referral and set timeframes for units participating in cancer diagnosis and treatment and was introduced for penile cancer in Denmark on 1 January 2009. The main outcomes were number of patients diagnosed within and outside the CPP and secondary outcome include biopsy findings, the ratio between urgent suspected penile cancer referrals and the number of patients subsequently diagnosed with penile cancer (conversion rate).

Inclusion: Penile biopsy in the study period.

Exclusion criteria: Referral for urgent suspected penile cancer, but clinical evaluation deeming penile biopsy unnecessary.
