Retrospective review of patients with abdominal or retroperitoneal liposarcoma: Treatment, outcomes, and prognostic factors

Aim

The aim of the present cohort study is to report outcomes following the management of both primary and recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcomas at a tertiary referral center over a 10-year period.

Study design

Methods: This study is a retrospective review of consecutive patients treated at a tertiary referral University Hospital in Denmark with biopsy-proven retroperitoneal and/or intra-abdominal liposarcoma.
Perspective: By reporting outcomes with long-term follow-up, this study may contribute valuable real-world data on the management of both primary and recurrent liposarcoma. In particular, it may help clarify the role of aggressive surgical strategies, including multivisceral resections, and the impact of resection margins on oncological outcomes.
Furthermore, the findings may help refine patient selection for repeat surgery in recurrent disease and support more individualized treatment strategies that balance oncological benefit against surgical morbidity. Ultimately, improved understanding of outcomes in routine clinical practice may contribute to optimizing treatment pathways and inform future multicenter studies in this rare and complex disease.
 

About the project

Definitive evidence to guide clinical practice in the treatment of retroperitoneal liposarcomas (LPS) remains limited, particularly regarding the management of recurrent disease. Retroperitoneal liposarcomas are rare tumors, and much of the available evidence is derived from retrospective cohort studies from high-volume sarcoma centers. Surgical resection remains the only potentially curative treatment for primary retroperitoneal liposarcomas. Although complete surgical resection at the time of initial presentation offers the best opportunity for long-term disease control and cure, recurrence rates remain high, ranging from approximately 20% to 55% depending on histological subtype, tumor grade, and resection margins. Retroperitoneal liposarcomas have poorly defined margins and an inherent higher risk for local recurrence.
