FURCA-trial: Follow-Up after Rectal CAncer

Aim

The FURCA trial aimed to investigate the effect of patient-led follow-up on health-related quality of life, symptom burden, psychological distress, patient reported involvement and satisfaction, and health economic outcomes 3 years after rectal cancer surgery.

Study design

A multicenter, randomized controlled trial.

About the project

The increase in survival of patients with rectal cancers is challenging in terms of how we organise clinical follow-up. The combination of a growing population of cancer survivors, a lack of evidencebased follow-up guidelines and a demand for involvement of patients in cancer care underpin the need to look into follow-up strategies.

In the FURCA trial we developed and tested a patient-led follow-up strategy targeting the individual patient’s needs. The patient-led follow-up was based on patient-education and easy-access to hospital support when needed.

Primary outcome was health-related quality of life three years after surgery, and several secondary outcomes were also included.

From February 2016 to August 2018, 336 patients were included in three centers in two Danish regions. The final analyses are to be completed and reported in 2025.
