The surgeon appointed by Aarhus University within the field of health sciences is highly respected internationally. The English researcher Michael C. Parker is a new honorary professor of surgery. For a considerable number of years, his research has aimed at improving the outcome for patients undergoing major bowel surgery.

Michael C. Parker is an expert on the development of minimally invasive surgery, specifically the surgical management of patients with colorectal conditions, i.e. conditions of the large intestine, the appendix and the rectum.

In minimally invasive surgery, surgeons use special techniques and devices to see inside the patient without having to perform major surgery. Patients typically recover more rapidly after minimally invasive surgery than after traditional surgery.

Performed with live surgery

Minimally invasive procedures are also known as laparoscopic surgery, and Michael C. Parker has considerable experience with this type of surgery. As early as in 1994 he established an advanced laparoscopic service at the Darent Valley Hospital, which was the first in the UK to set up an operating theatre dedicated to laparoscopic surgery.

Michael C. Parker has taught for more than 35 years and he has performed live laparoscopic surgery at several international meetings.

He has held numerous leading positions within the field of surgery, both in the UK and internationally. Furthermore, he heads the surgery section of the Royal Society of Medicine and is the president of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.
