Supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma in Denmark

Despite advances in head and neck oncology, supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma (SGLSCC) remains under-characterised. Its poorer survival compared with glottic tumours is largely driven by early lymphatic spread and delayed diagnosis. Despite five decades of advances in radiotherapy and multimodal management, no comprehensive national overview exists for SGLSCC or advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). The aim of the project is to address this gap by examining epidemiological trends, treatment outcomes, and recurrence patterns for SGLSCC (1971-2020) and advanced LSCC (2011–2020).

We are conducting a national, population-based cohort study using the validated Danish Head and Neck Cancer (DAHANCA) database, one of the world’s most complete, prospective national cancer registries. This provides a uniquely detailed longitudinal perspective on SGLSCC and advanced LSCC. We include all Danish patients treated with curative intent for SGLSCC (1971–2020; ~4400 patients) and advanced LSCC (2011–2020; ~800 patients).

This comprehensive national overview of SGLCSS and advanced LSCC will inform future national treatment guidelines, may influence international management of advanced LSCC, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.
