MMF conducts research into aspects of the role of mitochondria in disease processes. This involves extensive research into relevant basic molecular mechanisms which lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. MMF’s research is translational and interdisciplinary in nature, which is to say its point of departure is actual clinical issues, and that the goal is to contribute tangibly to better conceptual understanding of pathogenesis and cellular pathophysiology and to utilise this knowledge to improve diagnosis and treatment. In other words, a precision medicine approach. The point of departure for MMF’s research is MMF’s seniors research concepts, which covers a range of disease categories that have mitochondrial functions and with their role in molecular disease processes as a focal point. A panel of adequate state-of-the-art methodologies are used and these are continuously developed in step with scientific advances.
