Clinical Professor in Benign Gynecology 1005062

A position as clinical professor in Gynecology, affiliated to the Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at Aarhus University and to the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Regional Hospital West Jutland, Denmark is vacant from 1 Marc 2019.
 
The position as clinical professor in Gynecology requires concurrent employment as consultant at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Regional Hospital West Jutland. Candidates who do not hold such a position must also apply for the announced position  as consultant at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Regional Hospital West Jutland.

The department
The medical staff comprises 18 consultants, 12 junior doctors in training, 80 midwives, and 15 nurses. Clinical activities include 40.000 outpatient visits (obstetrics and gynecology) with a total of 3000 surgical procedures (C-sections included), and 3200 deliveries.

The staff is organised in teams. For gynecology, these include hysteroscopic surgery, robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, urogynecology, endocrinology and assisted reproduction (in collaboration with the university fertility clinic in Skive). For obstetrics, specific teams take care of feto-maternal medicine, labor ward obstetrics, diabetic pregnancy and psycho-social risk pregnancy.

The department is currently located at the Regional Hospital West Jutland, Herning but will in 2020 be located at the new hospital in Gødstrup.

Current research activities at the department
Current research areas within gynecology comprise out-patient surgery and patient’s satisfaction, sex stromal tumors, laser treatment of the menopausal vaginal syndrome, single-port robot-assisted hysterectomy, the PCOS syndrome and teenage sexual development. Future development includes conservative surgery for benign uterine diseases. Ongoing obstetrical research comprises fast track caesarian section, environmental factors and normal delivery and diabetic pregnancy.

Academic staff at the department
In short, the university staff includes three associate professors, and part-time affiliation for the professor in gynecology at Aarhus University Hospital. At present two PhD students are affiliated and further two PhD studies are scheduled. Clinical focus for the successful applicant
As far as possible, clinical function will align with the expectations and scientific activities of the successful candidate.

Required qualifications
The department wishes to recruit a candidate, who is a qualified and registered as specialist in gynecology and obstetrics, has an academic degree (PhD, DMSc) and is an active researcher at an international level. The expectations are closely connected with the position as consultant. The applicant is furthermore expected to have:
• Documented clinical expertise.
• Research experience at a high level including an independent research profile.
• Experience as a research leader and supervisor.
• Pre- and post graduate teaching experience.

In addition, it is expected that the applicant is ambitious and has a good academic standing, clear and visible skills of communication, and success in collaboration and leadership.

The applicant should be a driving force at both the national and international level in development of new treatment modalities and teaching especially within common benign gynecological diseases.
In making the appointment, emphasis will be placed on the extent, quality and originality of the applicant’s body of international scientific publications, including contributions to further developing the subject area in question. Moreover, an assessment will be made of the applicant’s research management abilities.

The position as clinical professor
The clinical professor will hold a split post consisting of 50% clinical work and 50% research and university related academic work. The functions are described in the agreement between Aarhus University and Central Denmark Region (link til professoraftalen) and the organization of research in of “Aftale om professorer og akademiske koordinatorer på sundhedsområdet i Region Midtjylland” (link xxx). This is an integrated and mutually binding collaboration between the hospitals in the region and the Faculty of Health at every corresponding level of management.

The clinical professor will be:
• Leader of the academic staff at the department.
• Primus motor for the development of a new university clinic in benign gynecology.
• Member of the scientific board in the hospital.
• Co-responsible for implementation of the strategical goals for reaserch.

The clinical professor and the management of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics are jointly responsible for the clinical and scientific development in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the hospital.

The clinical professor will refer to the head of the Department of Clinical Medicine, Aarhus University through the academic coordinator for the Regional Hospital West Jutland concerning University related matters. Regarding clinical matters, the professor refers to the head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
