Profile

Robert (Bobby) Zachariae, DMSc., is professor at the Department of Psychology and Behavioural Science, Aarhus University, and the Department of Oncology, Aarhus University Hospital. He is director of the Unit for Psychooncology and Health Psychology, a research unit focusing on biopsychosocial cancer research with special emphasis on cancer survivorship issues.

Current research interests include clinical, socio-economic, and psychosocial predictors of long-term outcomes in cancer patients/survivors, e.g., distress, pain, sleep, fatigue, and cognitive complaints. A number of ongoing projects evaluate the efficacy of both face-to-face and digital psychological interventions, e.g., expressive writing intervention, mindfulness-based therapy,  cognitive training, and cognitive-behavioral therapy on cancer-related distress, persistent pain, cognitive complaints, and insomnia among cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.

Non-cancer-related health problems investigated include psoriasis, infertility treatments, COPD, and pain. Early studies focused on experimental investigations of hypnosis and psychoneuroimmunology. Finally, a number of publications have focused on systematic reviews and meta-analyses, e.g., of associations between stress and infection and the efficacy of psychosocial interventions.

Robert Zachariae has been research fellow at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, USA, and visiting professor at Centre for Medical Psychology and Evidence-based Decision-making (CeMPED), University of Sydney, Australia.

He is currently author or co-author of more than 375 books, book chapters, and scientific papers in medical and psychological journals, which have been cited more than 18,000 times, corresponding to an h-index of 76 (Google Scholar, April, 2024).
